  • Windy, cold, low cloud base on Montecucco

The XCSkies forecast was for 17 knot north north east winds at 4,000' with cloud base at 4,000' to 5,000'. Launch on the west side, the main Sigillo launch, is about 3,700'. I'm looking up at the main launch outside our window here at the Residence Alba Rosa and while now you can see the launch unlike this morning at 8 AM, it is cloudy just above it.

The day (Saturday) was cancelled. It looks like good weather ahead for tomorrow and Monday.

  • Raising funds for the Canoa school

    Ken Wilson <<lostboater>> writes:

I am doing another charity ride for the Canoa school. I have Kevin's paragliding auction on the blog also. http://scooterdiaries2010.blogspot.com.

Ken heads up the James Dean Byrd Foundation the the US. All the money goes to help the English school in Canoa, La Escuela Bilingue los Algarrobos. Surfers, paraglider and hang glider pilots all help out the school. There has been a bit of a drought there, so now they need a water tank. Check it out.

  • South of Monterey flying

    Rodrigo Russek <<russek>> writes:

A very nice takeoff. Pilots used to launch at a much lower part of the hill in that same place, but some friends put a ramp in that upper part of the hill some eight years ago. Not many people know it or fly it but I think it has great potential and you'll probably like it. This year was ruined by all the rain, very few flyable days with low ceiling.

It's about 70km south of Monterrey, Mexico, the road takes you to a small town called Rayones, so we call it that. It's about 1230m asl, ground is about 580mts asl.

It's great because you have the Sierra Madre mountains going north, north west and you also have flatlands going north toward Texas.

This year has been terrible, but it usually works great.

  • Wet and cold in Sigillo

Thursday the winds were strong which is why the Jeff's went up early for a flight. The clouds came during the day and it always looked like it was going to rain, but it didn't until late at night. Then the thunder and lightning came knocking out power to the Residence Alba Rosa, where we are staying. The Jeff's were driving Zippy back to his place with Dustin and Alex six kilometers north of Sigillo and they got caught in the squall. The rain was so thick that we could no longer see the lights of town, 1.8 km away from our window. For a while we thought that they had also been deprived of their electricity.

The car went through flooded streets with standing waves showing up in the gutters. There was some damage to the right front wheel well. Because the straps of the inflatable rack come through the gaskets on the doors, they let in rain. There were inches of it in the floor of the car.

Power was restored around 6 AM the next morning. But the clouds and the rain are still with us. This is the practice day, but no one is flying. Cloud base has been below launch. It is about 15 to 17 degrees Celsius. I have been listening to thunder for the last few hours (it is around 2 PM now), and it continues to rain lightly.

The forecast for tomorrow is mixed with low top of lift and weak thermals (local forecast says rain). Northeast winds at 4,000' at 13 knots (18 earlier at 11 AM). I don't know which launch we will be going to if at all.
