I totally understand your dream. It has taken me a number of years to start my pilot training, but I got there eventually.
Maybe you could start off going once a week to do your private license that way you will only need to find a few hundred each time. It may take you a bit longer, but if you love it you will get there.
It's not only the money, but the study is full on, there is a lot of information and knowledge you will need to acquire so make sure you have the time as well. Doing it gradually (although slowly) will help you to convince your wife that it is worthwhile and won't break the budget (it will stretch it though).
It's definately worth it, I love every moment and I encourage anyone to follow their dreams.
