love/hate flying relationship - 2009/08/12 15:06
Hi all,
I'm looking for some general advice.
I'm 28 years old and have always had a passion for planes and flying. The problem is i'm a nervous flyer. For this reason I have always told myself that flying is not for me and have stuck to my career in engineering. Recently I've been having a bit of a career crisis and have been having serious thoughts about embracing my fear and getting my licence (PPL first then who knows...).
My question is, do you think its possible to get over the fear of flying and persue my licence or should I stick to what I know and spend my days working on the ground as an engineer??
Any advice would be great.
Cheers.

I'd rather be in a plane with a nervous pilot than an over confident one.
Don't live your life wishing you had tried something.
You will love it and the skill you will learn and the fun you will have will let you control your nerves.
Go to a flight school, explain the situation and let them show you over an aircraft. For an engineer, their (relative) simplicity will be confidence building.

Go give it a shot, you'll love it. I was nervous at first, and completely freaked out on the stalls. We just pressed on in the training, became more comfortable with the aircraft and how it handled then we went back to stalls and steep turns.
I turn 17 in Feb 2010, within a few weeks of this birthday i will have my PPL! can't wait. I've got my solo hours up in the circuit area, today we did Precautionary Search and landing (low level flight!!), now i move onto my area solo hours then Nav's in time for my PPL exam in Feb!
Give it a shot, i'm sure you'll love it
Cheers Jake

givit a shot. being a passenger is completely different to being in the left seat, you'll be so focused on what you & your aircraft are doing that you won't have time to be nervous.
