Re:Expecting twins - 2009/03/24 09:26
I knew a guy back in England who did the last half of his flying in his own Aztec. Theres nothing wrong with a light twin. Just don't go over board and jump into a slippery Sceneca etc.
I have been flying Scenecas, and Partenivas, and have gathered some 100hrs in them. I don't agree that your be any safer, your just as safe in a single.
Singles Glide (most do anyways) Multis Give you an Extra Engine.
But when a multi looses 1 engine, espically if you have a critical engine, you can have yourself one hell of a bad day. Whilst doing all your Drills, you need to maintain perfect control, and maintain your blue line. If you can't keep control of the aircraft, i.e keep it balanced, you could below Blue line pretty darn quickly! And to get that speed back, means losing height. I recomend if your dead set on flying a multi, looking into an Aircraft which has no critical Engine, good cockpit ergonomics, and make sure you know the plane inside and out. If you have a good multi instructor they can teach you a few bits and bobs.
I recommend P68 Partenavia as an Entry level twin. It Cruises at around 135kts, no critical engine, comfortable - ish to fly. And not a B*tch to keep at Blue Line. Although Single Engine Performance is poor, as it is non turbo! But, it can keep you at 3000 on a bad day.
Don't for the love of god go jumping into anything like a sceneca, even if it does look like the same size plane. Apart from having to manage Turbos, which in the older aged ones can be menacing, It can require alot of work to keep blue line, and its Very Slippy on Landing. Beautiful aircraft to fly though. I just found Landing, can be a pain. Also a Sceneca is capable of 160kts, with low time, you wont have the ability to *stay ahead of the Aircraft*.
I don't know if anyone has flown a D42* Twinstar? ... I believe someone mentioned to me they are brilliant Multis to fly, and are cheap.
But yup, If your going to go splash the cash like i have to build multi time, find yourself a nice multi, a good instructor, and not some stuttering fool who says he has 10 hours on one. Then sit down and read the manual until you can cram every bit of info on the plane into your head, and know your CAPUFIC AFFIMP Drills so much that when your driving your car your saying them to yourself like one of those annoying songs that gets stuck in your head.

Ollie
