Is it time... - 2008/03/23 23:53
Perhaps AOPA now needs to ask itself the hard questions, should 'we' continue on as a membership lobby group, or revamp and become a magazine subscription service until the funds are back.

Pros: Increased readership, increased advertising, increased funds to recruit..

Less costs associated with having 8 directors represent 4000 members, instead 3 could do the job

Focus on marketing and sales instead of lobbying..

Cons: .. anyone? Only one I can think of is CHANGE!!!
Can it handle change?

I suspect a Hannan response very shortly. Watch out for the spin.

Edited to add;

Kris,do you still have the AGM minutes from Murray Bridge? Do you know how many members AOPA had then?

The membership base has been declining ever since and I would wager the membership now is around half that and probably logarithmatically proportional to the general decline in GA.

The magazine, as another way of looking at the problem, was worth selling as the official organ when the distribution was 4,000, not worth anything now I suspect.

The magazine has been on the news stands for some time now and if it had been a glowing success, you and the rest of the World would have heard about it. No..just silence. What does that tell you?

I suspect that the distribution is also halved by virtue of not being a monthly.

I suspect too many doors in Canberra are closed to certain Directors so the representative nature of the organisation is possibly ineffective.

The logical suggestion would be amalgamation with a "compulsory" organisation with a good membership base, but again I fear who would want to inherit the Board, half full of clowns running the show now.(note I said half).

My observations only, so one should wait until the membership numbers for YE 2007 come out with the financial report which notes the membership subscriptions and can be reasonably interpreted give or take the pre paid's etc.

Kris

Membership is now below 4000, the actual numbers are none of Bob's business. E-mail me and i will tell you.

Director costs. When i first joined, well you know what it was, a dinner and wine club.

That has changed. The entire costs are less than that of 4 individual Directors there in your time, NOT counting the WA one!!!! When I say individual, I mean SINGLE Director, total costs less than those run up by any one of the 4.

You will get the costs in your copy of the Auditors report.

Why have 8. Workload. Already this week I lost 5 working hours to AOPA. With only 3 Directors you would lose free labour, since the costs are now minimal, why do that.

The magazine, we can do that now.

Why not just be a Magazine, answers, CASA, BAL, AAC etc etc. GA can't afford to give these people free reign.

Bob,

I dont have AGM minutes, never have. Nor do I think that can acheive anything. Most I remember about that AGM is spending the time with Ron, who is still sorely missed and wont be forgotten.

Re magazine. I think selling it is like mortgaging the future. Can help short term but not long..
However, no one is argueing that the membership is in decline, but I can see your one positive comment regarding the amalgamation of all the clubs, and I think its quite a good one in theory.. Reality may be a different kettle of fish.

Kerans,

Workload, it always surprises me that Directors claim this workload as a 'hourly bill'. Perhaps one needs to look at the agenda and remove non necessary items until you have got the core issues and the core jobs. Personally, the only CORE job is to maintain members, not fight CASA, BAL, AAC etc etc. Without the members, AOPA is going to struggle. Focus on the membership, maybe some marketing and sales focus on the directors..

Anyway..Good luck nonetheless.

Kris;

If some of the Directors spent more time doing AOPA business instead of self promoting themselves on various forums a lot more would be achieved. Ask the office for a copy of the draft State Chapters. There is possibility something like this could work. The fact that I was involved would render it an object of distain with obvious evil intent.

Ask for it, if only to see if it is not destroyed.

Cheers,
Bob.

Hi all, I thought AOPA must have been dead or at least on life support. Have a look at the home page or the forum, no sign of life there. I am no longer a member, I couldn't see the value in it.
