FlightSim or FlightTraining - 2006/08/27 18:49
I'm sure anyone who fly's has had a go at a home flight simulator, but some guys go to extremes. Perhaps I'm one of them! Maybe others could share their experiences with desktop flying.
My intention was always to supplement my real world flying, so realism is pretty important. Hence the hardware! Have a look at my website to see the progress at www.kennair.com
I wonder how other pilots see home simulation as a training aid?
Ken.

they certainly help you with indentifying instruments etc. The cockpit is not totally foreign if you have spent some time on simulators
but
theyre hard to really simulate real flight, because you don't have the situational awareness or the feedback from the movement, unless you have one of those boeing/airbus training sims :-P

Re:FlightSim or FlightTraining - 2007/06/16 11:35
Gday Ken,
I think flight simulators are great for getting a basic grasp of aspects such as instrumentation, and avionics. Especially if you have the payware model's which try and replicate every little detail as possible.
To get the best out of flight simulation I highly recommend joining the VATSIM online network which provides Air Traffic Control and online aircraft traffic, that are all real people (no computer voices) either flying or controlling online. I do both and have got alot out of it so far.
A fair few people on the network are real life pilots, either private or commercial, and also real life air traffic controlers who assist with the controller training.
Worth having a look www.vatpac.org & www.vatsim.net
Your PC-12 sim looks good too btw, great to see people going to these length's to enhance flight simulation.
Cheers, Ryan.

Forget MS flight sim
If you all live in Melbourne come and fly a real 737-800 at QV in the city
I suggest you have a look at this web site This real sim is open to the public late this month
Take a look http://www.flightexperience.com.au Matthew Giannelis http://www.aircraftsales.net.au

Re:FlightSim or FlightTraining - 2008/08/14 16:51
G'day folks, im new here so forgive me If I offend anyone. Flight simulators have been viewed as games for many years, however in recent times the Aivation industry is starting to see the benifits of using flight simulators as a viable trining tool. Whilst there are various programs available for flight simulation we see 2 main streams. One is the commercial industry useing open flight or VBA platforms, whilst the other is groups using flight Sim 9, FSX, ESP or X-plane 9. There are limitation to all of the programs, with the first be stuck with 86m strm & texture images alike. With the increase development of FSX, ESP & X-plane 9, they have now been viewed as a threat to commercial simulators. Many people build there own sims using FSX, ESP or X-plane 9. Many build Boeing 737 series and Airbus series, whilst others build helicopter, Trike, Cessna's and alike. These guys that are now forming commercial business that are taking the art of desk top flight simulation to new levels. Under the new amendment of the MOS for FTD part 60, FSX, ESP & X-plane alike are gaining some serious ground, with high fidelity resolutions and mesh terrains down to half a meter per pixel. At the end of the day PC generated desk top flight simulation is no more a game , but a viable training tool that can contiue to grow. With the availability of Cockpit shell, Gauges, Projection systems, Motion systems but to name a few, you will find it now to be in an affordable price range of the average business or home user. As a real world aviator and simulator builder, I find the two work hand in hand. simulators don't cause bad habits, non attentive pilots cause bad habbits.
Cheers
